Why is swimming so good for you?

Swimmers are in fanastic shape and those who swim regularly know that not only do they look great on the outside but they feel just as great on the inside. The health benefits of swimming are almost unmatched by most other sports. Swimming, unlike jogging, cycling, weightlifting or any other activity is ideal for all ages and physical abilities. It is a very low impact exercise and the weightlessness the water provides greatly reduces the stress on joints, virtually eliminating the potential of back, knee and other muscular injuries common in high impact activities. The water pressure against the legs and arms is also beneficial to the circulatory system and adds to the muscle pressure exerted on the veins to aid in returning blood to the heart and lungs.

Swimming works your whole body, improving cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, endurance, posture and flexibility all at the same time. Your cardiovascular sysytem in particular benefits because swimming improves your bodies use of oxygen without overworking your heart.

With regards to weight loss swimming gives you a fantastic aerobic workout and can burn up to 790 caloriess per hour. That's 70 more calories than running and cycling.
